Is Traffic Light Installation a Political Move?
Now, it is common knowledge that Councillor Allan Pollard is contesting the general elections as the P.U.P. standard bearer for the Queen Square division. The traffic lights have also been installed in the Freetown and Port Loyola constituencies. So today, the media asked whether the initiative, exactly two weeks prior to the general elections, is a political ploy to curry favour with voters.
Allan Pollard, P.U.P. Standard Bearer, Queen Square
“We waited until funds were available and funds were available to do two so we did that now. It just so happens and coincidence that we are two week away from an election and some would say it is opportune time. But like I said, although I am in the race for general elections, my work and my tenure at the city council is not over so I still have to push on.”
Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor
“We had a plan and we stick with the timeline of our plan. Getting the necessary infrastructure in—because it had to be imported—and we went along with our timeline and it said within our three years in office that we would build a network of lights within the city that speaks to safety of pedestrians. And that is what we are achieving today. Nothing has to do with election; it just so happens that it ties in and we are blessed.”
