Eamon Courtenay says “Let the People Vote!”
According to Senior Counsel Eamon Courtenay the B.P.M.’s application was entirely misconceived and extremely late in the process.
Eamon Courtenay, Attorney for P.U.P.
“What they tried to do at the last minute having in my view realized that the applications as filed was entirely misconceived. They said well in our claim form we asked for certain relief and as I had to point out to the acting chief justice this was not the trial of the matter. They were seeking only an injunction under notice of application when they realized that that cannot succeed you cannot jump back to the claim form and say well give me the relief. That type of relief can only be give after trial. The point of the matter is that once they realized that they could not success on the applications as framed they should have abandoned it. This is an exercise in which there was an attempt to hijack the Belizean democracy. It was an attempt to undermine the Belizeans who vote. It was an attempt to stop the victory is likely to be inevitable for the people’s United Party. Therefore we marshaled our resources, we marshaled our attorneys to defend the right of all Belizeans to go to the polls on the eleventh and to have democracy celebrated and triumph. What we need to do regardless of who wins is to move sweetly after the elections to do the necessary re-divisioning. That is what is required. In the meantime, let the people vote.”
