Belize Peace Movement Will Appeal CJ’s Ruling

Robert Lopez

According to Robert Lopez of the Belize Peace Movement, the request for an interim injunction was for the government to conform with section ninety of the Belize Constitution. Also joining the hearing virtually this morning as Senior Counsel Andrew Marshalleck who represented Lord Michael Ashcroft. Marshalleck argued that his client did not want the elections to be delayed but for the Elections and Boundaries Commission to propose to parliament that a redistricting exercise be undertaken. This proposal would include a report from expert Sean P. Trende, who was sourced by Lord Ashcroft. According to Lopez, the report confirms the need for a redistricting exercise.

“The special report confirmed that seventy two percent of the constituency were malapportioned. It confirmed that it violates all international norms. If you have a five hundred and twenty percent disparities between the smallest and the largest being Fort George and Stann Creek West how can you say that those are equal or nearly equal. No. We are dampened at all. We are actually energize to get to this far. We were certainly hoping that she would have granted the other request that we made to now hear our case. So waiting for that because our case will continue, but the ruling that took place today; we shall appeal.”
