Witnesses say driver at fault in knockdown
13-year-old Jameel Torres remains in the Karl Heusner Memorial hospital after he was knocked down by a Novelo’s bus at the corner of Kraal and Fabers Road. Torres was on a bike along with a friend when the accident occurred. On Thursday, the bus driver, Alphine Jergenson, told News Five that he attempted to avoid hitting the young boys after they tried to beat the bus through the intersection. However a passenger on the bus and an area resident who saw the accident visited our studios this afternoon. Both witnesses told News Five that the boys were not even on Fabers Road but were at the corner of the streets when the bus hit the bike. The witnesses, who did not wish to be interviewed on camera, said that the bus driver, who was travelling up Faber’s Road, was speeding. The witnesses say the surprised teenagers saw the bus coming at them and tried to get out of the way. While Torres’ friend did manage to jump off the bicycle, Torres was not that lucky. The bus hit the front of the bike, knocking the teenager off the seat. Torres was thrown down onto the pavement unconscious. He suffered head injuries and a cut to the knee. Today the teenager is alert and remains in a stable condition at the KHMH. Police say no charges have yet been brought against Jergenson and the accident remains under investigation.
