Weed Bust on George Price Highway; Five are Charged
Just after midday on Thursday, police intercepted a Ford Explorer SUV travelling to Belmopan at a checkpoint between miles thirty-eight and thirty-nine on the George Price Highway. Inside the vehicle at the time were Corozal residents Carlo and Nina Moreno, Francis Gentle, Elsa Echeverria and Dilcia Daniels. Nothing appeared suspicious, but a search of the spare wheel that was mounted under the rear cargo area of the vehicle led to the discovery of three parcels of cannabis. Inside the left passenger door panel an additional three parcels of weed were found. In total, there was almost seven pounds of drugs within the packages. All five were charged for Possession of Controlled Drugs with Intent to Supply. Carlo Moreno was additionally charged with Attempt to Corrupt a Public Officer when he attempted to bribe Corporal Richard Arnold with one thousand five hundred dollars. ComPol Chester Williams shares details.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“We continue to do our anticrime operations across the country; all in an effort to interdict firearm and drug traffickers as well as the cross district criminals. And so every so often we would mount checkpoints on the different parts of the highways, doing stop and search of vehicles, of persons who we know or believe are involved in the trade or trafficking of drugs and firearms. And yesterday, the police did receive a tip and they acted on that tip and mounted a checkpoint on the highway and that checkpoint yield the seven plus pounds of cannabis in a vehicle in which these persons were travelling. Those persons within the vehicle were arrested and charged and they should be appearing before the court sometime next week.”
