ComPol Williams: Issue at Lands Department Dealt With

On Thursday, the legal counsel for the Ministry of Natural Resources was arrested by police for suspicious activities at the Lands Department in Belmopan and all branches countrywide were shut down until Monday. Land documents were being retrieved from the premises and when the police responded, they came in contact with Llewellyn Usher. It ended with a police officer being assaulted, a firearm was pulled and Usher was roughed up and place in a pickup truck and carted away to the police station. Today, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams shared official details on what transpired and later went on to say that the matter has been dealt with.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“The police did go to the Ministry of Natural Resources as information was received that documents were being removed from the offices.  And while they were there, there was a situation between the police and an individual. That matter has since been dealt with and addressed and I say no more about the matter.”

Duane Moody

“Sir we are understanding that documents were being removed even from the night before.”

Chester Williams

Chester Williams

“Well yes we did find some documents that were being removed from the Lands Department and we currently have those documents in our custody. And as soon as the new Minister of Natural Resources is installed and perhaps maybe his C.E.O., then we are going to hand over those documents to the new minister and his C.E.O.”

Duane Moody

“Sir the person has been charged?”

Chester Williams

“I said that matter has been dealt with. Let me make it clear. The documents we are referring to were not found in possession of the legal officer; it was found in possession of somebody else. And we have absolutely no evidence to suggest that the legal officer is a part of any corruption or cover up at the Ministry of Natural Resources.”

Duane Moody

“Well sir let’s talk about the actions of the police officers. Some people are saying that it was too excessive. Your comment on that.”

Chester Williams

“That is their opinion; I am not going to comment any further on that matter.”

Duane Moody

“Sir the officer pulled out a firearm, cocked it.”

Chester Williams

“I am not commenting any further Mister Moody.”
