Square One arrives for weekend concerts
You’ve heard their music, often recorded and popularised by other artists. This weekend, if you’ve got 30 bucks to spare, you can appreciate them in the flesh. Square One arrived in Belize today and if the hype is to be believed, the country–musically speaking anyway–will never be the same.
Jacqueline Woods, Reporting
Square One, one of the Caribbean’s hottest soca bands is in Belize for the first time. The lead singer says she is only too happy to be in the country and promises to give a performance you will not forget.
Allison Hinds, Lead Singer, Square One
“If you think you have been to concerts before, it is nothing, it is nothing in comparison to coming to Square One.”
Jacqueline Woods
“Just dress comfortably and bring out the rags?”
Allison Hinds
“Yes come out dressed to sweat bring your flags, bring your rags because we will have a wonderful time.”
Wave Promotions has brought the band to Belize. Brian Mossiah, the manager of Wave radio says Belizeans will not be disappointed.
Brian Mossiah, Manager, Wave Radio
“What we wanted to do was provide entertainment at a different level for Belizeans. We are not disrespecting the other performers that have visited our shores, but we believe that this band from what we’ve seen on tape had a very high level of interaction with their audience and we wanted to bring that to Belize. I am sure Belizeans have seen Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires perform and they have a very high level of energy all the same, but you need to see this band. This band is sort of the trend setter in the Caribbean so to speak, not disrespecting the others as I said.”
Anderson Armstrong, Lead singer
“Dress to sweat. Bring your rags, your towel whatever because we are going to have a ball and ladies the original plumber pussycat, no matter what you call me is here in town so I will be checking you out.”
Jacqueline Woods
“I understand when you guys start playing on stage you don’t stop it is non-stop jamming.”
George Jones, Keyboard player
“Well we try to give a good session and as long as possible. The only time we will be stopping is probably for a few drinks.”
“Oh we are very excited whenever we come to a new country there is always that air of excitement and we are here to deliver the goods.”
Brian Mossiah
“One thing I’d like to tell you ’bout at the Belize City Centre. The difference this time around, not disrespecting the other promoters is organization in terms of selling tickets, getting tickets at the door, allowing people to get inside the City Centre, we’ll be well put together and there should be no mad rush at the door. It should be a comfortable situation, security will be tight like a… I can’t tell you that on television, but it will be tight. And we are hoping that all the Belizeans will be able to enjoy a splendid evening with Square One.”
Because this is the band’s first trip to Belize, the members say they will not only be performing but plan to get to know the country as well.
Allison Hinds
“We are just looking forward to having a great time and having a wonderful experience, seeing that it is our first visit to be able to see the culture, the people, experience the food, the climate, the atmosphere and just to soak up everything.”
The first concert gets underway at the Belize City Centre this Friday from nine. Tickets are available from Stone and Baron’s, Record Shack, Venus Photo and Records and CY’s Music and Gift Shop. Prices are $30 in advance and 35 at the door. The second concert takes place in Benque Viejo Del Carmen on Saturday night. It will be an all night outdoor event at the Marshalleck Stadium. Square One’s Allison Hinds will be Dickie’s guest Thursday on One on One.
