Corozal Man Lies to Police after Hitting Elias Villanueva with His Car
Corozal resident, Roy Burgess is in trouble with the law—not only for hitting a man with his car, but lying to police about it. Burgess was unmasked with his lie after police mounted an investigation into a hit and run accident which he reported. On Friday night, Corozal Police were informed of a hit and run accident in the Santa Rita area. The officers visited the Corozal Community Hospital where Elias Villanueva was seen with bodily injuries. Burgess told police that he saw Villanueva on the streets and decided to transport him to the hospital. But a witness of the crime told police that it was Burgess who hit Villanueva with his vehicle.
ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch
“What the police know so far is that Villanueva was taken to the hospital by one Roy Burgess who claimed that he was in the area of Santa Rita in Corozal when he saw Villanueva injured on the ground and as a result took him to the hospital. However our police investigation revealed that from other witnesses that it was Burgess who accidentally ran over Villanueva and thereafter was assisted by others who took him to the hospital. As a result Burgess was detained and his vehicle was impounded and he was later served with a notice of intended prosecution. Villanueva was later transferred to the Northern Regional Hospital and later to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he is listed in a stable condition.”
