Approximately 288 Persons in Shelters Countrywide

There are a total of two hundred and eighty-eight persons in fourteen shelters in three districts. Fifty-seven people are in two shelters in Orange Walk and about forty-two in Belize Rural, where five shelters are open. In the Cayo District, there are four shelters open in Calla Creek where eighty-eight persons have sought refuge and in San Ignacio there are fifteen persons in one shelter. Also in the Cayo District, eighty-six persons from the village of More Tomorrow are in two shelters. NEMO’s Alpheus Gillett breaks down the numbers in Belize Rural.

“In terms of lives, people living along the riverbanks, most of them are in shelters. We have four official shelters open, we have about sixty persons in shelters in total in the Belize River Valley area. The situation might get worse, but most of the people that should be moved are evacuated already from their house into the shelters. We have one shelter open in the Burrell Boom area; that’s the Saint Therese primary and we have about twenty-five persons in that shelter. We have shelter open in Bermudian Landing, but those persons are from Lemonal. We still have people in the primary school in Rancho. We have people in the shelters in Crooked Tree and now we have in Bomba; some people are in the church in Bomba and some people are staying with family members.”
