A Baby is Delivered in Police Station in O.W.

Joseph Myvett

A Honduran woman delivered her baby early this morning inside a police station. Amparo Lopez was detained at the Orange Walk Police Station where she was scheduled to appear before the court on immigration charges later today, but by four-thirty a.m., she began to experience labour pains.  Two police officers, including Corporal Teresita Higinio, assisted the mom to safely deliver her child. Here’s more from ACP Joseph Myvett about what transpired.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“This morning shortly after four-thirty a.m., a female detainee who was in custody by the name of Amparo Lopez, a Honduran national, began complaining of pain and she was assisted by a woman corporal of police and another female. During the process, they realized she was in labor and the baby which is a baby girl was safely delivered at the station and then transported to the northern regional hospital. The mother was caught in Orange Walk sometime a month ago and was swabbed and placed in quarantine. So, she had just arrived back in Orange Walk on Friday in order for her to be charged for immigration related offences and she would have appeared in court sometime today.”

“Was the status of her pregnancy known at the station?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“I am certain it was known that she was pregnant but however how much time remaining for her delivery was definitely not known by officers.”

Reporter

“So, it wasn’t like it was apparent that she was in labour and then you call an ambulance and then take her to the hospital.”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Yes, there was no time for that based on the circumstances of what was happening at that time.”
