Renewed Contracts are Under Revision by AG’s Ministry

According to Fonseca, while the new administration is prepared to work with political appointees from the previous government, a number of those contracts are under revision.

“Do you find that it either binds or constricts you ability to be able to bring in new blood, so to speak, bringing new ideas in terms of moving the respective ministries forward?”

“Yeah.  Of course, you know, as I said, we have to do things right.  We have to do things in accordance with the law.  We would have hoped that many of these people would have done the responsible thing, the honorable thing.  They knew that they are political appointees and we would have hoped that they would have resigned honorably and given the new government an opportunity to carry out its new mandate, a decisive mandate by the Belizean people for change, but many of them have chosen not  to do that.  They’ve taken the position that we are here, we have big contracts, “if unu wahn we go, you haftu pay us off.”  Again, this is what the Belizean people voted against, these types of contracts and they are now, after the elections, again trying to benefit.  It’s like a parting gift given to them by their party and they want to continue to benefit and continue to burden the Belizean people, Belizean taxpayers who at the end of the day are the ones who will have to pay for these contracts to be put to an end.  So we are looking at all of it and I am confident that in a few weeks we will be able to resolve all these matters based on the advice of the attorney general’s ministry and we will move forward with our new teams and get to work for the Belizean people.”
