The Cost of Butane, Is it Cheaper?
The issue of fluctuating butane prices, despite a single importer in operation, was also addressed by the N.G.C. spokesperson. According to Daniel Gutierrez, the cost of purchasing butane has been considerably reduced since the company took over in May.
Daniel Gutierrez, Spokesperson, National Gas Company
“Facts are stubborn things and the fact is that since the beginning of the operations in May, when you compare the prices of LPG imported by NGC and what was happening in the past, the price of LPG is actually lower. It is, in some cases, a lot lower. Sometimes over twenty dollars for the hundred pound cylinder lower, when you take a look at just what’s offered at the retail level. So clearly, like I said before, facts are stubborn things. The fact is that the price of LPG is lower now that NGC is importing it. How that is passed on to the consumer is a matter for the Belize Bureau of Standards and a matter between them and the retailers. That is not NGC. NGC’s job, the premise of NGC was to take bulk commodity, bring it to Belize and lower the price as it is landed in Belize. That has been accomplished and that is incontrovertible, that is clear. So I would say to the Belizean public that the premise of NGC to use bulk prices to land LPG to the country of Belize lowered, that has been accomplished.”
