Mayor of Evanston, IL visits

In keeping with a city sister relationship, this week, Belize City is playing host to the Mayor of Evanston, Illinois. Lorraine Morton says her interest in Belize was stimulated by the Lighthouse Rotary Club in Evanston, which wished to help educate Belizeans about safer traffic guidelines. She formed a committee and unlike the “working committees” we are so fond of, she got something done.

“And out of that I pulled some people together formed a committee and out of that, is our chief here, Sam Hunter, of the Fire Department and he’s been quite active in working in Belize. He came down this time with plans that showed our water system, preservation ordinances, sign ordinances, some other materials that show how we govern our city because you know, believe it or not, Evanston IL is about the same population of this city.”

Mayor Morton and Fire Chief Sam Hunter were given a tour of Belize City by Mayor David Fonseca today. They will travel to other areas of the country tomorrow.
