Raleigh begins its largest expedition
Tomorrow, Raleigh International’s biggest expedition ever gets under way at Camp Oakley, Burrell Boom. This is the 11th expedition in Belize and features 168 volunteers from around the world, including ten Belizeans, with five from the Belize Defense Force. Over the next ten weeks, the Belizean volunteers will join other Raleigh Venturers in sites across the country from Cerros in the North to San Antonio in the South. They will participate in nine environmental, archeological and adventure oriented projects. The projects include completing the construction of three schools in Santa Clara, San Marcos and San Antonio. They will also conduct the first radio tracking trial of the fer-de-lance snake and the first mapping survey of the Fireburn Mayan Ruins. Other projects include supporting marine scientists in the implementation of reef surveillance work, mapping the Shipstern Lagoon and completing three treks to the summit of Victoria Peak. The Venturers will also be given an opportunity to attain qualifications and experience in canoeing and diving.
