Chester Sees Degree of Criminal Wrongdoing in Case against Former U.D.P. Minister

Rene Montero

The criminal case against former U.D.P. Works Minister Rene Montero is active.  His successor Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing Julius Espat has forwarded documentary evidence to the Commissioner of Police, the Integrity Commission, and the Attorney General Officer.   Espat requested the investigation into the possible commission of criminal offences by Montero for the wanton and prolonged abuse and misuse of the Ministry of Works’ resources for private gain.  Montero refutes these assertions.  The Belize Police Department is compiling evidence.  When the process is complete, they will send the file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, who will then give directives on how to proceed.  Today, Police Commissioner Chester Williams says that he sees a degree of criminal wrongdoing from what he has read.

“The investigators are in possession of that matter. We recorded a number of statements last week and we have a number of other statements that we will be recording this week. I have read some of the statements that were recorded and yes we are seeing some degree of criminal wrongdoing and as soon as the investigators have completed the investigation and put the file together we are going to forward it to the DPP for her guidance on that matter.”

“Criminal wrongdoings on the part of Mister, alleged criminal wrongdoings on the part of Mister Montero or Mister Boots?”

“I am not going to say at this time. Whenever we have completed with the investigation then we will disclosed whatever information we have to the public.”
