Dr. Mariama Williams, Presenter, Public Lecture
“Well globalization has not had a benign impact on the Caribbean. I mean as a geopolitical space, we were created by prior waves of globalizations and we know the impact on our day to day life have been traumatic. So we cannot assume that this recent process of reintegration of the world economy will somehow leave us in a neutral space. And of course it means that more and more countries are getting involved. The things that we normally depend on?on producing, there are lots of countries that produce it, the barriers are being dropped. More and more countries…Eastern Europe is now becoming emerging economies. So there is lot more competition, there is lot more push towards the bottom, in terms wages, in terms of social conditions and we in the Caribbean are very much dependent on trade. So we have to be aware of this and we have to be aware of how it is impacting our community. The nation, poverty eradication, our environment all if this in flow of products and services that’s going back and forth.”
The public is invited to the lecture at the Holy Redeemer Parish hall on Wednesday, at 7:30pm. A workshop will also be conducted for WIN Belize members and special guests on Thursday. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Women’s Department and the National Women’s Commission.
