A Two-Year Crime Strategy!
Earlier in the news, you heard Commissioner Williams break down the relaxation in the COVID-19 regulations. One of the significant changes is the adjustment to the curfew hours. Now, we’ve heard before how the curfew has contributed to a reduction in crime – so will this adjustment cause a surge in criminal activities? Commissioner Williams says that even if criminals have any plans to break the law, their crime strategy will address those concerns. Williams told the media today that they will be releasing a two-year crime strategy in the coming days and that the plan will include a targeted approach to gang violence. He expects that the implementation of this plan will see a crime reduction. Here’s how he explains it.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“We as a department have a strategy in place and this week I believe we will release the national crime fighting strategy and we are going to outline how we intend to police the country for the next two years and within it has mechanisms to address gang violence and we are going to apply those. The truth is the whole issue surrounding gangs has been here for a time now and we don’t expect it go away over night but we are going to do our best to ensure that we can limit the amount of gang activities in this country. The Police alone cannot stop crime and it must be dealt with multi-sectorally; while police will normally only address the effects of crime, there are other organizations tasked with addressing the symptoms and what causes crime and we are going to ensure that under our new crime fighting strategy we tap into those organizations to see what they can do to help us from a social, economic stand point and we believe that once we do that we should have a tremendous reduction in crime coming the end of this year.”
