Guides & Scouts collect food for hungry
If you see a suspicious bag hanging from your fence or door this weekend…RELAX. It’s part of a program called “Scouting for Food”, an annual food drive by the Scout Association of Belize. But for the past five years, they’ve been guided in their efforts by the Girl Guides Association of Belize. Tomorrow, young boys and girls hit the nation’s streets distributing as many empty bags as possible. Don’t you dare use them for garbage, put food in them.
Sr. Elsa Oliva, Chief Commissioner of Girl Guides
“We’re asking people to give tin food, non-perishables, ’cause they are going to be spoiled before the people actually get them. And then they are going to be left with the home so that the person can donate as they so wish. And then on the 28th, the group will go back and collect the bags with the food in it and deliver it to the Red Cross.”
The Red Cross will handle the distribution of the food. Next week, it’s Guide and Scout Week and the associations have a long “to do list.” Among the many activities for guides are “Thinking Day,” when greetings are sent from all over the world to sister associations. There will also be a bon fire next Friday. Scout and Girl Guide troops from all over Belize will participate in next week’s activities.
