Will City Voters Return the P.U.P. for a Second Term?
On Saturday, the P.U.P. held its Belize City Council convention to select the P.U.P. eleven to contest the March municipal elections. Mayor Bernard Wagner will be contesting for the mayoral seat against the U.D.P.’s Orson Picart. The ten P.U.P. councilors include some newcomers like cyclist Kaya Cattouse and Edmund Kwuan, but there are a few familiar faces like Micah Goodin, Allan Pollard and Albert Vaughan. When we caught up with Vaughan, we asked him about the feeling going into the elections next month and if he feels the current council has done enough to get a second term in office.
Albert Vaughan, P.U.P. Councilor Candidate, Belize City Municipal
“I am a man of service. I love to serve and so I love to be a part of the growing of this city and so I believe to complete my work here in the City, I need another term. So, I offered myself. You know I am a retiree and could have sat home like many other people and enjoy politics but I believe I am better when I am a part of it. I offered myself and the delegates have confidence in me and they elected me again to run for the next city council so I am thankful to them. So, that is why I put myself in because I love to serve.”
Andrea Polanco
“Do you think the city residents will return the P.U.P. slate to office once more in March and do you think you have done enough?”
Albert Vaughan
“Yeah I think we have done enough and there is a lot more to be done but compare this council that is three years old – we have under our record almost thirty-odd streets, forty-odd streets that we have either chipped and sealed or upgrade. Yes, I am very confident that the people of Belize City understand that this council, this P.U.P. council has worked under a U.D.P. central government that said we would not have lasted six months. We did and we did many things – unprecedented that we have done – look around Belize City.”
