Luis Martinez is N.T.U.C.B. President
Over the weekend, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize held its annual general meeting virtually under the theme “N.T.U.C.B.: Overcoming the Challenges, Living our Purpose, Realizing Meaningful Reforms.” A new executive team was announced with Luis Martinez as the president, while Miguel Aguilar was elected as the second vice president. Martinez says that one of the pressing issues is the labour complaints tribunal. The law provides for the labour complaints tribunal, which is tasked with providing a fair and impartial appeal process from complaints of unfair dismissal and wrongful terminations. Martinez says the tribunal needs to be reactivated.

“We could say for almost two decades the tribunal has been defunct and only in 2020 they had named a new tribunal. The chair had now been ascended to the Senate as a senator so this leaves the government with the responsibility to name a new chair. So we could get that ball rolling. Our hope s that that new chair would be a person with towering and immense integrity and willing to be committed to ensure that the tribunal operates. It is unfair for workers to be suffering and they don’t have anywhere to go. So we want to ensure that that avenue is open for the working class.”
