Meanwhile on the home front, organizers say it will be one of the biggest multi-sporting events ever to be held in Belize. It is being organized to coincide with the country’s fortieth anniversary of independence. The Independence Games Belize 2021 is being planned to attract athletes from thirteen sporting disciplines in games held at eight venues in Belize City within two days. Leading the organizing committee is founder of Rugby Belize, Tony Gillings. Today, at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex, the inaugural meeting and launch of the Independence Games Belize 2021 was held.

“This is an opportunity for people to find out about sports and to engage with the youth and get them involved in it.”

“Amidst the pandemic, how do you plan to make it a reality?”

Tony Gillings

“Okay, everybody ask me the same question. We can’t do sports because of the pandemic. But that’s not gonna last forever. We have to treat the pandemic like we do the flu. It’s gonna come around probably every year, it’s gonna be with us forever. Just because we have a pandemic, it doesn’t stop you from planning things and that is exactly what we are doing. We are planning today for September because I think by the end of August, we should be getting back to somewhere near normal; I hope. And if it is not the case, we postpone.”

The International Games Belize 2021 will be held under the theme, “Celebrating Belize, Celebrating Sports, Celebrating Youth.”
