Protesters block Guatemalan border
This morning, News Five received a frantic call from a Belize City woman, telling us the Belize Guatemala Border had been shut down. However, a quick check at the Belize Customs, put any fears about increased international tension at least, to bed. Officials along the border tell us about ten Sunday morning, angry Guatemalans, upset about their government’s decision to remove a governor in the Peten region, prevented vehicles from crossing over. The crowd demonstrated for about four hours and then dispersed. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Alan Usher says the matter is strictly a Guatemalan domestic affair. Belizean shoppers in Melchor de Mencos on Sunday were not affected since the demonstrators allowed taxis through.
