Minister Julius Espat on Recommended Salary Cuts
As a part of cutting that wage bill, all ministers of government are on a ten percent salary cut. Today, during the Open Your Eyes Morning Show, Minister of Infrastructure Julius Espat shared his personal views on reducing the wage bill.
Julius Espat, Minister of Infrastructure
“I don’t think anybody wants to be in a possession to cut salaries – private sector, public sector – nobody wants their salaries to be cut. It’s the most difficult thing anybody could ever imagine. So I don’t have a possession, except it hurts my heart to even think of it. I believe we have other ways to minimise costs. I believe you have people that are being paid that don’t go to work, so I think I would start there. You have people that have a job, but don’t work – meaning you have the ones that are being paid and they don’t show up at all, so that’s kinda obvious. And then you have the ones that are being paid and sit and a desk and do absolutely nothing. And you know why. So I would also go in that direction. And then you have to also look at efficiency of how you run a business.”
