BDF soldier shot by police
A police officer has been suspended and BDF soldier and a civilian are hospitalized following an incident in Douglas Village early Sunday morning. Although Orange Walk Police and Internal Affairs are still trying to determine exactly what occurred, initial investigations indicate that around three am, following a village fair, some youths were having an argument. The police officer was trying to prevent the situation from getting out of hand, when a BDF soldier approached. Witnesses say the soldier and the officer then got into misunderstanding of their own which erupted in violence when the soldier pulled a machete. Witnesses say he raised the machete and the police officer fired a shot hitting the soldier in the left side of his abdomen. The bullet exited his back and hit a bystander, Pascual Torres, in the leg. Torres and the soldier were transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where they are in stable condition. Police have recovered both the service revolver and the machete. The officer has been arrested and placed on interdiction during the investigation.
