New houses for Maya Mopan
Today nine families from Maya Mopan, got the keys to their new wooden, zinc roofed homes. Nine four hole tabletop stoves were also handed over as a donation from the BWEL gas company. The homes were destroyed when a strong wind sent sparks from an indoor fire hearth into a thatch roof and quickly spread to nearby structures. During construction, the Belmopan Red Cross Society gave the victims–close to sixty people, the majority of whom were children–shelter and food. Local businesses, as well as national companies, such as the Belmopan Sand and Gravel, Wood Depot, WJ Habet, Builders Hardware, Bradstar, Gallardo Services, Colormart, Cisco Construction and the Spanish Lookout Community Outreach Program, readily came forward to donate time, energy and money into the rebuilding process. The nearby communities contributed food and clothing to the victims. Both political parties, represented by their mayoral candidates, were on hand daily to assist in the project. Maya Mopan is a village located about a mile outside Belmopan.
