P.S.U. Concerned About Politicising Senior Positions in Gov’t Departments

But what does the Public Service Union have to say about it? While News Five has confirmed that Doctor Manzanero is not a member of the P.S.U., first Vice President Dean Flowers says that the union does have cause for concern, especially where it appears senior positions held by public officers are becoming politicized. Flowers says when this happens, it disenfranchises career civil servants, many of whom spend years preparing themselves for leadership roles.

On the Phone: Dean Flowers, 1st Vice President, P.S.U.

“From a Public Service Union standpoint, the concern is in line with exactly how you framed your question Duane, which is by the government moving senior positions from 106 to 107, and we are only aware of course to date of one position by which they have gone that route, and that is of course the Comptroller of Customs. It raises concerns for the Public Service Union and members who are qualifying themselves and are dedicating themselves to the service with the hope to one day elevating to the top position within the different ministries and departments. So politicising, because converting these positions to a 107 appointment, is politicising these appointments and it disenfranchises career public officers and it also discourages career public officers.”
