No Victory Celebrations on Elections Night
So what will the police department be doing differently this time around? On the night of November eleventh, following the general elections, officers were powerless in containing throngs of party supporters who took to the streets. Police say they do not plan to let this happen again.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“We saw where the enforcement was not as rigid as we would have wanted it to be on election day, but we must understand that this time it’s a smaller scale election in the sense that this does not affect the rural areas, it’s only the urban areas and so in terms of mobilizing people it will not be as strong as general elections. Nonetheless, we will ensure that we do what we can do to ensure that we contain the situation, but we also call on the political parties to play their role in speaking to their people so as not to have them come out in large numbers with a view to try and celebrate. So we are hoping that that will be able to work.”
