P.U.P. Dominates the 2021 Municipal Elections: P.U.P. 65 – U.D.P. 2
In November, political pundits called the People’s United Party’s massive win of national assembly seats the “Blue Tsunami.” Well, just months later, a second wave has washed over the land once more. After the ballots were counted, Belizeans learned that an astonishing sixty-five of the sixty-seven municipal councilor seats and mayoral posts were blue. Only one mayor and one councilor—both in San Ignacio—were left standing for the United Democratic Party. It was a stunning defeat once more for the U.D.P. whose slates had included many first time aspirants and women candidates. Even though it was a massive blowout, Belizeans by and large respected the eight p.m. curfew and celebrated their win, or bemoaned their loss, quietly and COVID-19 safely. Today, Prime Minister John Briceño took his second victory lap.
