Fire leaves fifty homeless in Maya Mopan
A fire in Maya Mopan, Belmopan has left fifty people homeless. Sources in Belmopan tell News Five that earlier this afternoon, a fire began in one of the thatched houses of the village and rapidly spread to other homes. We understand that it took some time for villagers to get water to the scene because there was no ready source in the immediate vicinity. Fire officials from Belmopan did respond to the area but according to the Belize Fire Service, the fire fighters in Belmopan have reported that twelve thatched houses burnt completely to the ground. Those left homeless by today’s fire will receive food and clothing for the days to come, donated by the community at large. We understand that the Belmopan Red Cross Building will be used as a temporary lodging facility starting tonight. Maya Mopan is about a mile outside urban Belmopan. News Five will have more on this story in tomorrow night’s newscast.
