Noise Complaint May Have Saved Tortured Minor’s Life
According to ComPol Williams, the teenager, who was subsequently handled with little to no regard by police officers at the station, would not have survived the harrowing ordeal were it not for a noise complaint from neighbors. Sutherland, he says, is facing a raft of charges relating to the incident.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“The police have done most of our investigations and Mr. Sutherland has since been charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and wounding. He has also been charged with being the leader of a gang. The gang taskforce, or the GI3 unit is also looking at additional charges for him and his associates in terms of gang-related offences and then we see where we go from there. But it is a very concerning situation and how it happened and I am sure that had it not been someone calling [and complaining] of loud music and the police had to respond which allowed the child to escape that that child would have been killed.”

“Let me ask you a question ComPol, is it that we’re looking at something that appears to be an initiation of some sort or something ritualistic? What is your investigation saying?”
Chester Williams
“It is saying that they had kidnapped the child with the intention that they would have killed him. I do not say that it was some ritual or initiation, it could not be that. It should not be that when a victim comes to the police that the victim should be treated in such a way that he or she ends up being victimized and that is exactly what happened with that minor. Having been in the hands of the police, he was re-victimized by the police. Police must know how to speak to people and police must not always paint everybody with the same brush.”
