Maya Quest 5 Expedition – the Findings

The Friends for Conservation and Development conducted the Maya Quest Five Expedition to Doyle’s Delight earlier this week.  The purpose of the expedition was to assess the impacts and document the human footprint on the highest point in the Maya Mountains.  According to the F.C.D., the six-person team observed mining activity at Ceibo Chico, as well as gold panning activity in Mal Pago Creek. The report says that the team, “observed a changing pine forest ecosystem due to forest fires that have affected a few ridgelines. In the distance, denuded areas along the western flank of the Chiquibul National Park were observed, as well as Victoria Peak and several mountain tops to the east.” The F.C.D. notes that a survey marker placed in 1970 wasn’t located at the high point of the ridge.
