Cabinet Meets in Marathon Session to Review Union’s Counterproposal
The Briceño administration met in an all-day session today at the House of Culture in Belize City where a cabinet meeting was convened. There were a number of pressing issues that were brought up for discussion, including the pending 2021 budget and the proposed ten percent salary reduction for teachers and public officers. The meeting concluded around five-thirty this evening after which the ministers filed out of the compound without granting interviews to the media. In passing, Prime Minister Briceño indicated that he will not comment on the situation with the unions until the negotiations have been successfully concluded. To reiterate, the Joint Unions Negotiating Team has remained firm in its objection to government’s proposed wage cuts, presenting counterproposals of its own which cabinet reviewed today.
