Amandala gives scholarship to U.B.
What may be the first scholarship to the new University of Belize has been awarded by the publisher of the Amandala newspaper who also happens to be the Chairman of the U.C.B. Council/U.C.B. Interim Board, Evan X Hyde. The two year tuition scholarship, valued at six thousand four hundred dollars will be given to Melvin Pinelo, the valedictorian of Belize Technical College’s class of 1999. Pinelo plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology at U.B. The Amandala scholarship is based on academic excellence and financial need. Evan X Hyde told News Five the Amandala has assisted students in the past to pursue their education but felt especially compelled in this case since in his words, “it would be tragic for the valedictorian of Technical not to be able to go on with his studies.” U.C.B.’s Development Department says it applauds Amandala’s generosity and welcomes Melvin Pinelo to the student body.
