Volleyball Association Makes Appeal to G.O.B.

Allan Sharp

Despite the hiccup caused by the pandemic, Belize has a strong chance of advancing to the Commonwealth Games. But to do so, its female and male national teams must participate in regional matches scheduled to occur between September and December of this year. President Allan Sharp says the athletes need to get back to practicing on the court, but with the COVID-19 restrictions in place, that cannot happen. Sharp makes an appeal to the government.

Allan Sharp, President, Belize Volleyball Association

“If I can lobby, whoever I can lobby, we want to see volleyball get back into practicing and playing at some point very, very soon. It is important for me to add this because already, Central America and the continental tournaments are being set from September to December; they are already there. So we need to start to officially practice – I’d say by May – we need to be physically getting on the court and training to be ready. And there is a lot at stake. Belize in beach volleyball has the opportunity to make the Commonwealth Games which we have never reached that high ever. We are just outside the top five for this side of the world and we need those matches, we need to go play, we need those tournaments, we need to go practice. And this will, I think, motivate people. I think people feel right now that we need these things. So we would love to get volleyball back playing, especially outdoor. And like they say in volleyball, “Let’s get the ball flying.”
