Nightly Curfew to be Extended to Mid-April

Michel Chebat

The nightly curfew which has been in place for several months will be extended at least until mid-April, despite a considerable reduction in active COVID-19 cases.  It’s a joint decision that has been made by the ministers of Home Affairs and Health and Wellness ahead of the expiration of the existing curfew on April third.  Earlier today, Minister Michel Chebat spoke about the decision to lengthen the restriction of movement well into next month.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Health & Wellness

“It is going to be extended until the fifteenth of April. By that time, cabinet would have been able to meet and to review the numbers and a decision will be made at that time. We are going into the Easter break. The public health measures are in effect; the curfew is in effect. We know that for Easter everybody wants to let down their guard, they want to get out and party. But we are asking people to please continue taking the precautions. Our message for this Easter is wash your hands, wear your masks, watch your distance, please don’t let the low numbers draw you into a lull. You have an obligation to protect yourself and to protect your families.”

In a release issued today, Cabinet approved the protocols presented by the Ministry of Health and Wellness for the reopening of casinos on April fifteenth. The release also speaks to cabinet receiving an update from its union consultation team on the progress of discussions with the joint unions concerning fiscal adjustment efforts. Further consultations will continue on April fifth.
