Audubon supports proposed sanitary landfill

Two weeks ago the environmental umbrella group BACONGO issued a press release condemning government’s plans to establish a sanitary landfill at mile twenty-seven on the Western Highway. The release warned of environmental dangers for surrounding communities and focussed heavily on dire consequences predicted for the Belize Zoo — which happens to be a member of BACONGO. Today another member of BACONGO — the Belize Audubon Society — issued a press release of its own. And far from condemning the project the society publicly endorsed the National Solid Waste Management Plan and praised government for its efforts in addressing this major environmental concern. According to Audubon, the mile twenty-seven site — which will process refuse from Belize City, the Western Highway Corridor, Ladyville, Boom and the cayes — is ideally suited to the task and was chosen after an exhaustive scientific study, financed by the I.D.B. and carried out by a Canadian consulting firm.
