National Flags Half-Mast for Prince Phillip

All national flags in Belize will be flying at half mast as a sign of respect on Saturday, the day that Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, will be buried in England.  The Governor General Sir Colville Young asked the Prime Minister to order the lowering of the flags and for church bells to toll on April seventeenth, 2021, at eight a.m. as a sign of respect and mourning. We asked Minister Balderamos-Garcia for her thoughts on the significance of his passing for Belize.

“As the queen’s consort, he play a very important roll. We are still a constitutional monarchy. And so, our Belizean affiliation if I can put it that way with the Queen it is not that we consider her personally to be the head of the country. Well, she is constitutionally. But, her representative in Belize is the Governor General. My comment on it is that the significance of his passing is that we are members of the Commonwealth of Nations. And, that is an organization that has always brought a lot of good.”

Funeral services for the prince, who was the husband of Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth, will be held at the Saint George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
