Police suspect murder in Cayo drowning
The discovery of a body in the Mopan River was initially called a drowning but as of this evening police suspect murder. Around four p.m. December twenty-seventh, San Ignacio Police went to the temporary bridge that connects the Santa Elena and San Ignacio sides of the town. There they saw the body of a woman floating face down in the river which was identified as thirty-six year old Alexi Aldana of Santa Elena. The body had a small cut above the eye and a postmortem conducted this afternoon revealed Aldana drowned following head injuries. Police have detained two Santa Elena men for questioning, who were last seen with Aldana. When they searched both men’s homes, police found some pieces of Aldana’s jewelry hidden away. According to police press officer Christy Castillo, both men have been giving conflicting versions of what happened that night. They remain in police custody tonight pending charges.
