BACONGO objects to proposed sanitary landfill
In related news, the environmental umbrella group BACONGO has issued a release condemning a proposed national sanitary landfill which would be located at mile twenty-seven and a half on the Western Highway. Using arguments that seem to have already been satisfactorily addressed by the exhaustive study which identified the site as the most appropriate, the BACONGO release seems to be a thinly disguised plea not to locate the sanitary landfill anywhere near the Belize Zoo. Why it is okay for a haphazardly controlled garbage dump to be located less than a mile from the densely inhabited neighborhoods of Belize City but not okay for a tightly managed sanitary landfill to be placed two and a half miles from the zoo is not explained in the BACONGO release. In any case the argument may be moot as it appears that government may be unwilling to finance the ambitious but necessary national waste project… and seems content to ignore the problem until the country’s garbage dumps begin to overflow to the point where not even a new four wheel drive can plow through the mess. If you want to learn more about waste disposal the Audubon Society is sponsoring a presentation tonight at seven thirty at the Belize City Marine Terminal.
