Belizeans top Hondurans in Cayo boxing
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re right on time for this Christmas serving of Sports Monday. The Honduran National Boxing Team was hosted at Cayo Friday night by their Belizean counterparts thanks to the efforts of Gustavo Torres.
We take you to fight number one as Arlington Pandy gets matched up with Juan Garcia of Honduras and it’s the Belizean putting on a clinic demonstrating how to hit and not be hit… and when the judge’s decision comes at the end of four two-minute rounds, there’s no doubt that the Belizean Arlinton Pandy has picked up the “W”.
In the next bout at one hundred thirty-five pounds Joseph Eagan wouldn’t let the decision go to the judges against Dennis Lino. Lino looks in trouble here and a little later in the round Eagan simply pummels his opponent at will forcing the referee to intervene. At one hundred forty-seven pounds Michael Soberanis did enough to impress the judges against Wilmer Fernandez and when the decision comes, it’s the Belizean’s hand that gets raised in victory.
At one hundred sixty-two pounds it is Eugene Martinez in defense of Belize against Dasmon Wilfredo and he deals out enough punishment to get the nod at the end of four. Meanwhile Kelvin Middleton at one hundred seventy-eight pounds knocks down his opponent in the very first round with a straight right hand and he goes on to record the victory giving Belize a five-zip sweep over Honduras and we say to Gustavo Torres and Company, good show, let’s do it again.
Turning to the cycling scene, it’s two teammates heading to the finish line at B.T.L. Park where Wave Radio celebrates its first birthday in this mountain bike race from Gales Point Manatee to Belize City. Quinton Hamilton gets off his bike to take the “W” away from Jeffery Zelaya. Now here’s the sprint for third place: it’s Ernest Meighan easily over Orson Butler while Paul Trapp of Hattieville rounds out the top five. The elite riders have proven that the mountain bike crew simply is not in their class.
In football news, we go to the start of Sunday’s Belize Football League showdown at the M.C.C. Grounds and its Kulture Yabra kicking off against La Victoria of Corozal and we’re underway. Yabra’s first attempt at goal comes off the right wing from Esteban Hall, but Marvin Ottley handles. Moments later a beautiful set gets squandered as David McCauley misfires.
McCauly then gets an opportunity for redemption but it’s Marvin Ottley who seizes the moment. The breakthrough for Yabra comes around the thirty-fourth minute when Jorge Garcia sets up shop for Norman “Tilliman” Nuñez who delivers. Just before the half Yabra gets two opportunities to make it two-zip but come up empty.
Meanwhile La Victoria smothered by the Yabra defense gets its first real shot at goal in the opening moments of second half. Some twenty minutes after intermission “Tilliman” Nuñez serves to Esteban Hall who smashes the pill into an empty goal for the two- zip Yabra lead. Four minutes later, Willie Bo mishandles a floater giving up the easy consolation goal in the two-one final score.
In other scores we gathered from around the league, Sagitun scorched the Belmopan Bandits one-zip, while Grigamandala took out Acros Bombers five-one.
And that’s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
