Curfew for Policing in the Future?

On Thursday, we told you about the decrease in crime across the country for the first quarter of this year – with fourteen fewer murders recorded when compared to the same period last year.  You heard the Commissioner of Police say that the decline in crimes is because of the cops’ hard work and smart strategies.  But the public also believes that the COVID-19 restrictions may also have a lot to see with the downturn in violence. So we asked the Minister of Home Affairs if these kinds of restrictions will be considered for policing in the future.  Here’s what he had to say.

“Are these measures going to be explored further in terms of policing even when we move beyond the pandemic?”

“I do not believe that we should be restricting the movement of persons, so whenever it is we come out of the pandemic I do not see us putting in place curfews as limited to midnight – perhaps moving it to two a.m I believe is a reasonable time that we could eventually move it to. Again, this is coming out of COVID because really and truly whatever we have to do we could do it before two a.m. I would think. So, like I said, I don’t believe in restricting movements necessarily, so in terms of your question that is as far as I would be willing to consider.”
