Protesters Told: “Don’t Break the Law”
The Ministry of Labour has issued a statement this evening reminding unions and their membership to adhere to the laws of Belize during all protest activities. In particular, the Ministry points out that the blocking of highways and bridges are “unlawful actions which are not internationally recognized industrial action nor those permitted by our domestic laws.” They also remind protesters that congregating in groups larger than ten is a “flagrant” breach of the COVID-19 Public Health Regulations. The ministry condemns the blocking of highways and urges the unions to quote “abstain from criminal and reckless activities that are harmful and reckless to the wider public.’ The Labor Commission says it fully respects the citizens’ and labourers’ fundamental right to freedom of assembly and association and the freedom of expression as enshrined in the Belize Constitution and International Labour Organization Conventions which Belize has ratified.
