Children perform “Surfin’ Santa”

Story Picture
For the very first time, the National Youth Choir and the National Dance Company Juniors have joined together to do a musical production. The show is sure to put the audience in the mood for Christmas. News Five stopped by one of the rehearsals to find out what “Surfin’ Santa” is all about.

Laverne Andrewin, Music Director

“It’s about Santa being very tired of going around the world in the cold and he’s really tired of it and he’s getting too old for it and he wants a vacation. He wins this trip to go to the Caribbean to go relax for the winter.”

The rest of the story involves two villains, some disgruntled elves and a Santa Claus doing the limbo.

Tanya Sievert, “Mrs. Claus”

“It’s different from the Santa that people really know. People are used to a cold Santa and he’s always cooped up in his own place and now he gets to go surfing and limboing and snorkeling and it’s a change.”

Other members of the cast thought the play included some important lessons as well.

Shanice Lovell, Narrator

“The peace and happiness and sense of mind that Santa finds that he can be happy anywhere he goes and have friends. I wish that could happen to me.”

Organizers chose “Surfin’ Santa” to give the children in the National Youth Choir and the Dance Company Juniors exposure and experience in acting. A couple of actors thought it was a good idea.

Jacy McDonald, “Santa”

“You get to act more, be yourself, act wild.”

Jacqueline Dunsworth, “Ellen”

“The other people see the children’s ability. They have the ability to learn and they have really good voices.”

But what’s it like to work with the one hundred and one children that make up the cast and crew?

Laverne Andrewin

“They are willing; they’re happy. They’re too much. They’re jumping around. It’s hectic here because of the fact that they are so into it.”

The play graces the stage of the Bliss Institute on December eighteenth and nineteenth starting at seven p.m. Tickets for adults are five dollars and children are three dollars. Claudette Santos and Laverne Andrewin are music directors while Rosita Baltazar is dance choreographer. Evelyn Mosquea is vocal coordinator.
