Camalote wins Sir Andie Softball Trophy for third year
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re locked into this special serving of Sports Monday. Week eleven found Culture Yabra with the perfect opportunity to grab the B.F.L. lead after Sagitun’s fall Saturday night. They had seventeen points and the homefield advantage against the dangerous San Pedro Dolphins at the M.C.C. Grounds so let’s take a peek.
It’s Yabra looking to open the scoreboard when Barragan finds Norman “Tilliman” Nuñez but there’s not enough on the pill to worry Delmar Sutherland in the Dolphins’ goal. At the other end Willie Bo displays his goalkeeping ability using razor sharp reflexes to quell the firestorm. The Hendricks boys then hook up when Christopher finds Oliver but the shot just sails over the crossbar. Downfield “Tilliman” Nuñez gets another opportunity to put Culture Yabra ahead but Delmar Sutherland shows stellar credentials between the sticks, and yes, the goal net has a hole on the side.
Yabra presses the action. Esteban finds “Tilliman” but too much bounce takes the right away shot over the goal. And it’s yet another missed attempt by Yabra when Emory Nuñez misfires from pointblank range with the good left foot. And at the half it’s a scoreless match.
If you’re upset about that miss by Emory, then you are probably enraged by his particular offering to start second half. Meanwhile Oliver Hendricks decides to test Willie Bo from long range and to the delight of Yabra fans Willie Bo passes with flying colors. Landy Pinelo then makes his move from the left side but fails to make the hook up. Yabra replies with a nice shot from Rogel Jones but Delmar delights the Dolphins fans.
It’s getting late now so “Tilliman” fires from the right side only to see the ball whiz in front of the goal. Still a play by Emory Nuñez might have forced him to the bench, replaced by “Yellowman” formerly of the Bombers. The Dolphins look to score when Hendricks eases to Pinelo but Francis McCauley comes up with a super save.
The visitors continue to press and how the Dolphins didn’t come up with a goal out of four consecutive tries remains a thing of mystery. The ballgame concludes in a scoreless stalemate.
This allowed Grigamandala to leap to the top of the standings after beating Ambergris Turquoise two-zip out at the island. At Corozal, La Victoria hurt Belmopan Bandits one-zip; Juventus edged Acros Bombers two-one, while on Saturday night Real Verdes scorched Sagitun one-nil at Independence.
Now let’s head to Rogers’ Stadium for Sunday’s conclusion of the Sir Andie Champion of Champions Softball Tournament. We join the championship match in the bottom of the fourth inning with Sherlene Banner on the mound for Lady Rebels facing a four-two deficit at the hands of the defending champion Durleys Crystals of Camalote.
With two runners on, Shadine Salazar smashes one that beats fielder in left for a double and one run comes in. The next batter Patricia Thimbriel then hits to first which scores the runner from third and it’s a six-two ball game. Kenisha Sutherland then comes out and gets Smith to hit to first, gets Martinez to pop up to the mound, and then throws out Westley for the third out in a row.
In the top of the sixth Bernadette Fuller swings for a strike; they try to cut down the runner from third. She scores safely but the runner behind is put out at the plate. Camalote Durleys Crystals goes on to win seven-two successfully defending its title and Sports Monday says kudos.
We wanna congratulate Herman Salam and Ryan Leslie for coming up with the big victory in the seventy-two mile race from Cayo to Belize City presented by the Belize Mountain Bike Association. Troy Burns finished third. Nuff respect.
