Nominations are Open for Fisher of the Year

Dezeree Arzu

Do you know someone from the fisherfolk community who deserves to be named Fisher of the Year? If you know a fisherman or woman who is actively engaged in sustainable fisheries, and has persisted despite the challenging time brought on by the pandemic, then the WCS wants you to nominate that person. Communications Coordinator of the Wildlife Conservation Society Dezeree Arzu says nominations are open until June nineteenth and the winner will be announced on June twenty-ninth as a part of the fisherfolk month activities. Arzu tells us more about the qualifying criteria for submissions.

Dezeree Arzu, Communications Coordinator, WCS

“If you are deciding to nominate someone you need to give that person’s name and contact information and how you know that person. Is the person a family member, sister, brother or a friend? You also need to tell us how long that person has been fishing; whether it’s a seasoned fisherman or just started fishing. Also, whether the person belongs to an association or cooperative – that will show that they are involved with the fishing industry and not just going to sea. So, also give us that name of the association and or cooperative so that we can do the follow up. If you can get a copy of the fisherfolk license, if not we can definitely follow up with the fisheries department. The final thing we are asking for in the nominations is that you write a two hundred and fifty word essay or just a short write up of that person and describe why you think that person should get that award for this year 2021. Also, within that write up, talk about their involvement in their contribution to the management of Belize fisheries; talk about how they practice responsible fishing and how they have showed resilience over this COVID-19 pandemic.”
