Were Bomb Threats Part of Union Strike Action?

Michelle Longsworth

On social media, many inferred that the simultaneous bomb threats at the government departments may have been part of the strike action by the unions who remain at an impasse with the government. While this cannot be confirmed or countenanced, News Five did ask Belize Tax Service Director General Michelle Longsworth for a comment. Here’s what she had to say.

Michelle Longsworth, Director General, Belize Tax Service

“I wouldn’t want to assume or comment on that, but if that really is the case, I think that people in those positions would need to rethink what they are doing, rethink their strategy. There are other ways of doing things when it comes to industrial actions and I think that putting fear in people, because you do have people that really take these things and they get anxiety attacks, they panic. I could see from some of our staff leaving, you are dealing with different levels of people. Whilst my health may be good, you have others that would go into a panic attack or something. So it does cause undue stress to persons and I think if this is one of their tactics, I think they need to rethink and really consider if they’re doing this for public officers, then you don’t put public officers’ lives at risk.”
