Special Olympics this Saturday
The Special Olympics is back. The National Games will be held this weekend at the National Stadium and one hundred athletes from all over Belize have been invited to compete. The activity is designed to give people with mental and physical disabilities a chance to develop their physical fitness and enjoy friendly competition. This year the children of Stella Maris School recorded a song entitled “Courageous” to celebrate the games. Here’s a sample and some highlights of previous competitions and fun days.

The song was written by Joy Skeen. Belize has participated in Special Olympics in the United States twice and in 1992 the first Special Olympics was held in Belize. The committee in charge of this year’s event is asking for volunteers for the year round skills program and to help make the Special Olympics an annual event in Belize. If you would like to give your time, contact the Special Olympics office on Freetown Road. Their e-mail address is spedunit@btl.net. The National Special Olympic Games get underway at nine a.m. this Saturday at the National Stadium.
