And finally from the northern border, the entry point sits only a couple of miles away from the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico where over two thousand positive COVID-19 cases have been reported over the last two weeks. While we have heard top local officials say that they are monitoring the situation in both Mexico and Guatemala, we asked Gladden how much of a threat he believes these numbers pose to his staff on the ground.

“We are definitely aware of that. But, like I’ve said before, the protocols in place have been working perfectly. You can actually look at how the Free Zone operates. You will see that there are thousands of travelers that visit the Free Zone and there are zero cases. Also the Free Zone, the protocols that have been put in place, have been working perfectly, just like the one set out here for this first phase opening.”
