Boxing at Bird’s Isle on Sports Monday
Good evening, I’m James Adderley so pull up for this fresh version of Sports Monday. Week nine of the Regent Millennium Cup has come and gone and in its wake a new leader has emerged in the standings.
We go to the National Stadium here in Belize City where Acros Bombers plays host to Sagitun of Independence which is looking to step up the ladder. The young Bombers team launches its first attack in the opening minutes off a corner kick, easily corralled by Darren Hinds. It looks like Acros could take the early lead but number ten can’t get his punch on the pill from pointblank range.
This wakes up the Sagitun team which goes to Brendt Burgess for offense and only the timely intervention of the goalkeeper keeps the ball game scoreless. Again the Acros keeper dodges a bullet when this long range bomb is pushed on to the crossbar, but it seems the tide has turned Sagitun’s way.
Meanwhile folks the footage reveals a comedy of errors in front of the Acros goal until it is finally cleared. Of course it is only a matter of time and eighteen minutes in Brendt Burgess dances his way through the Bombers defense as Sagitun takes a one-zip lead.
Goal number two comes off a corner kick as Lopez finds the head of Brendt Burgess and he has his second of the ball game and at the half it’s a two-zip Sagitun lead.
We go to second half and it’s not even two minutes in when Tyrone Muschamp smashes a spotkick that makes it a three-zip Sagitun lead. It’s all Sagitun now and this may be why on one press they failed twice to get the ball between the sticks. Yes folks, the pressure must be off Sagitun when both Brendt Burgess and Wilmer Lopez fail to convert.
Folks for sure Sir George Brown will have to check into these misfirings by the Bombers who squandered every opportunity at the target in this one. Of course eating the goal is fashionable in this ball game as demonstrated by Brendt Burgess. Realizing that, Burgess makes amends beating the keeper to record his third of the ball game as Sagitun goes on to post the four-zip victory. More importantly Sagitun moves to the top of the heap with eighteen points and we say nuff respect.
They replace Culture Yabra of Belize City which was held to a one-one draw with Juventus at the People’s Stadium on Sunday. Week nine was good to Grigamandala which hurt La Victoria one-zip on Thursday night and then held San Pedro to a scoreless draw out at the island on Sunday. Belmopan Bandits also did good, beating Ambergris Turquoise three-two Thursday night and drawing with Real Verdes two-two at Capital City, Belmopan. La Victoria lost two in a row after getting scorched two-one by Ambergris Turquoise at Corozal. It’s the Turquoise’s first win.
Turning to the boxing scene, Gustavo Torres presented a nice amateur fight at the Big Bird’s Isle Sunday and we’re in the second round of the match-up between Steve Card and Patrick Gordon at one hundred fifty-three pounds. It’s Card dealing out the punishment. In the third the outburst by Card draws the surrender from the opposite corner, giving him the win by TKO.
Meanwhile folks, Horace Cadle, who has just turned pro, takes in the scene as he readies for his fight next month.
There’s an old boxer tale which says, don’t rush in in the first round. And maybe Deon Bainton, fighting at one hundred forty-five pounds against Garth Longsworth, should listen. Thus he has to fix his headgear in front of the crowd. But Bainton is full of energy and if you like a non-stop puncher, Deon is the man and he leads to a standing eight for the opposition. Is this a war or what and at the end of four both fighters are spent as the bell rings mercifully. Deon Bainton takes the unanimous decision.
At one hundred sixty-five pounds Eugene Martinez did just enough in his bout with Kenton Young to eek out a majority decision. And at one hundred eighty pounds Freddie Fuller strikes first blood against Kelvin Middleton. In the second Fuller comes out firing and looks in command but he hurts his arm and would not be able to continue. Middleton gets the “W” as a result. They say one man’s loss is another man’s gain.
We have to remind you that the Special Olympics brings up its presentation this Saturday at the National Stadium. It’s going to be a massive event and of course we appeal to the public at large to kindly support the Special Olympics. We all need to have some fun some time.
That’s it. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
