Faber on Recall Petition: “Another Obstacle to Rebuilding Our Beloved Party”

It has been twenty-four hours since members of the United Democratic Party submitted a petition to recall their party leader Patrick Faber. As we reported on Thursday, a group within the U.D.P. gathered two hundred and ninety signatures to being the process to recall Faber as leader of the U.D.P. But that’s only the first step – because they would need sixty-five more delegates to support this petition at a national convention to recall Faber. The group is hoping that Faber will quietly resign from the position – that’s left to be seen. Today we reached out to several members of the U.D.P., but they declined comment on the matter, while others didn’t respond. We did hear back from Chairman of the party Michael Peyrefitte and he told us that he will be commenting on Monday. As we told you last night, we got a response from Party Leader Faber during our newscast in which he called the petition “another obstacle in the rebuilding of our beloved party.” He went on to say that he is dealing with the matters internally and at an appropriate time he will be making a statement. And so we hope to have the comments from Chairman Peyrefitte on Monday. But the petition has been lodged at the U.D.P.’s secretariat. We take a look at a portion of the interview aired on Thursday with the bearer of the petition Tony Herrera.

“It is a resounding answer from the delegates; this is the rank and file of the party. So, for us to go over one hundred and seventy-two means a lot for us and also for the party. It sends a clear message to where we want to go. This is two hundred and ninety that signed freely. This was not secret ballot or anything. This was freely and fast. We went out there and got the signatures and brought them back. This was twenty-six constituencies. In these twenty-six constituencies, we have three parliamentarian constituencies, which is rightfully said; Corozal North; Queen Square and Mesopotamia. That is very important. Obviously, something is wrong and I am not here to disclose what is wrong and what I am saying is that we are not happy with the way he is leading. He is not fit to lead and that is the bottom line.”
